A WALK IN MARCH

FIELD TWO

Just here, over to the left in the woodland of field two, is a nice spot to picnic and if you keep a lookout you can spot the first Brimstone butterfly. It looks spectacular as it speeds around the fields and woods. It can travel an amazing distance in a very short time.

This is an area to the west end of the woods that we have been clearing. The aim is to open up the path and link the main field with a part that had become separated.

Even at this time of the year there are plenty of things to see.

Already the Devil's Bit Scabious is showing through.

This is an important plant here, because it provides food for our Marsh Fritillary Butterflies.

At the moment you can see the half-grown Marsh Fritillary caterpillars on the grass emerging from their webs in the vicinity of the Devil's Bit Scabious

Once the hibernaculi have opened each larva finds its own leaf to move on to the pupation stage.

The field itself is still quite brown, with the bleached Molinia grass still standing.

The deer have been using the middle of the field as a route from the woods to the better quality grass over the road.

At the beginning of the month frogspawn has appeared in the marshy area at the west side of the field in the woodland

and by the end of the month the tadpoles are busy swimming around.
