A WALK IN MARCH
FIELD THREE

Field Three covers about two acres (0.781 hectares). It is very sheltered and tends to
remain greener and less wild-looking than the other fields

The sun is beginning to come over tops of the trees and bring some warmth with it.

On the right of this picture is a part of the field that was cleared back in 2002.

It still needs regular brush-cutting but now provides a sheltered area for butterflies. later in the year the orchids that have reappeared will come through.

It is a good time to see the various fungi. This is Scarlet Elf Cup (Sarcocypha sp.) This lives on the buried, decaying branches of the willows and likes the damp soil found in broadleaved woods. This is either Sarcocypha Coccinea or Sarcocypha austriaca. But, according to an article in British Wildlife (Feb 1999), it is impossible to tell the difference without a microscope.

The hazel catkins have ripened and are now on their way over.

But other plants are on their way in. The figwort is beginning to break through the leaf litter.
The squirrels are enjoying the tasty spring growth, although most of it seems to be wastedand allowed to fall onto the ground.
