Mythology and tradition. Known as the "Poet's Tree" and as a source of immortality.

Male flowers.

In 1999 we spotted young male flowers on January the first. They were only about 2 cms long and were packed much tighter than these in the picture.

Female flowers. The small red parts are called "Styles"

The seeds (nuts) appear in September and start out green, but by the time they reach your fireside at Christmas they have turned the familiar brown colour.

Hazel is an ideal plant for coppicing ( See our land management pages for more about COPPICING)
