An old Devon saying was
"An even leaved ash and a four leafed clover, you see your true love ere the day is over."
The Ash is a native tree of Devon. It was the tradition in years past in the county to cut a bundle of ash sticks (an ashen faggot) and hang it in the house throughout the year. |

It is a very tough and elastic wood and was used in the construction of coaches, cars and aeroplanes. Because of its elasticity it was used in weaponry to make spears and bows. |

In Autumn the Ash produces seeds. They're called keys. At one time ash keys were used by the medical profession as a cure for flatulence. Preserved in vinegar and salt they were eaten as a pickle. |
