A WALK IN AUGUST

FIELD THREE

In August field three is a beautifully warm field. Unlike its cold winter character it becomes a welcoming field with masses of plants such as Corn Mint and Self heal.

The bramble bank on the right hand side of this picture is home to many butterflies, notably gatekeepers and silver washed fritillaries.

The willows have bent right down and blocked the pathway. This happens over the whole site which means that each year we have to clear a pathway through. These have now got the the stage where there is only a six foot clear grass beween one side of the field and the other, so rather more drastic action will have to be taken soon.
The Marsh Woundwort (Stachys palustris - Labiatae) is in full flower at this time of the year
There's also a lot of Corn Mint here. The two plants together give the field a purplish hue.
Keep a look out for the peacock butterflies (Inachis io). They like the nectar from the Hemp Agrimony as well as the warmth of this sheltered field. They hibernate from October until March and can then be seen for the rest of the year with a gap between generations in June and early July.
