A WALK IN APRIL

Field Three

Field Three is a warm, sheltered field, but at this time of the year, because of its narrowness, it doesn't get the sun for long each day, so its still a bit behind the rest of the fields.

Over in the west side there is a good display of Scarlet Elf Cup (Sarcosypha sp.) This lives on the buried, decaying branches of the willows and likes the damp soil found in broadleaved woods.

On the ground you can see evidence of squirrels, where they have eaten the autumn hazelnuts.

It looks as though they are also having a good go at the willow branches. There are a lot of short lengths of the branches on the floor. All very neatly cut.

Deer also go for the willows. They bite off a branch and then strip off the flowers by rolling the twig along their tongue.

We're not quite sure which creature has left this trail.

Now it's time to move on to the fourth field. Cut through the trees in the middle of the field or, if you prefer, go down to the west side of the field and take the diagonal pathway through.
